Prince William was in Cardiff on World Suicide Prevention Day on Wednesday to open a new mental‑health hub while his brother, Prince Harry, was conducting separate engagements in London about 150 miles away, with the possibility of a meeting with King Charles III remaining uncertain.
Harry visited Imperial College London’s Centre for Blast Injury Studies later in the day and was due to attend an event linked to the Invictus Games, the sports tournament for injured service personnel and veterans that he launched in 2014. He opened the Imperial College facility in 2013; the centre conducts clinically driven trauma and blast‑injury research and was visited by the King in February when Charles highlighted support for injured soldiers in Ukraine.
William’s visit at the Principality Stadium was to launch a hub set up by the Jac Lewis Foundation, established in memory of a 27‑year‑old footballer who died by suicide in 2019. The initiative, operating in partnership with the Welsh Rugby Union and supported by the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales, is intended to provide rapid mental‑health and wellbeing support in local communities and to act as a safe drop‑in for people at risk.
The Royal Foundation’s backing will enable the hub to open one day a week for three years, funding staff, counselling services and transport so people can be assessed and offered treatment where they live, the foundation said. During the visit, William met Jac Lewis’s father, Jesse Lewis, and members of the player’s former team, Ammanford FC, and spoke with representatives from the Welsh Rugby Union and Swansea City FC about the role sport can play in community wellbeing.
Harry, on a rare four‑day trip to Britain, has carried out a series of solo charity visits and remained apart from senior members of the royal family throughout the tour. He arrived in Britain on Monday and attended the WellChild Awards in London to celebrate the achievements of seriously ill children. On the same day, he privately laid flowers at Queen Elizabeth II’s grave at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle to mark the third anniversary of her death; the Prince of Wales was reported to have been about seven miles away visiting a Women’s Institute branch in Sunningdale.
William has carried out other engagements during the period, including a visit to Nottingham on Tuesday where he greeted supporters outside the Community Recording Studio and announced a £1.1 million personal donation to the BBC’s Children in Need to support young people affected by youth violence. He also visited Spiral Skills in Lambeth on Tuesday to promote the Homewards project, which aims to develop a blueprint to end homelessness.
The three men’s movements have prompted renewed commentary about the state of royal relationships. Harry and William remain estranged, and the Duke of Sussex has not been reunited publicly with the King or his brother during this visit. Harry and Charles last met in person in February 2024, when the duke made a transatlantic trip after learning of the King’s cancer diagnosis; that meeting lasted just over 30 minutes before the monarch returned to Sandringham to recuperate.
Harry, who stepped back from senior royal duties with his wife, Meghan Markle, in 2020 and now undertakes no official duties on behalf of the monarchy, has publicly aired grievances in a memoir and interviews. In his 2020 memoir and subsequent media appearances he made a number of allegations about members of the royal family. He told the BBC earlier this year that he believed the King would not speak to him because of his legal dispute over security arrangements and said he did not know "how much longer my father has." He has also expressed a desire for reconciliation, saying in past interviews that he would "love reconciliation with my family."
Reports this week said the King may return to London from his Balmoral residence, which has prompted speculation that a meeting could take place while Harry is in the country. Senior aides to the King and the duke were photographed together in London in July, which was reported as an initial effort to reopen channels of communication between the two sides.
Photographs and public statements from the royal households have not confirmed any planned reunion. Harry is reported to be staying at a hotel in London at his own expense and was not offered accommodation at a royal palace for this visit. As of Wednesday evening there had been no public meeting between Harry and the King or between the duke and his brother during the visit.
The separate engagements underlined continuing public roles for both men: William focused on community mental‑health and youth projects in Wales and England, while Harry worked with veterans’ and medical research organisations in the capital. Any further contact between them and with the monarch will depend on decisions yet to be confirmed by palace officials and advisers.
