Prince William and Kate Middleton were seen driving at King Charles' Aberdeenshire residence on Friday, marking their first public appearance since news emerged that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle intend to return to the United Kingdom for an extended period.

Other members of the royal family, including Prince Edward, Mike Tindall, Zara Tindall, and Princess Anne, were also observed at the Balmoral estate. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to bring their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who will be enrolled in school in Britain.

A source confirmed that the palace was informed of the Sussexes' decision. Insiders suggested that Harry and Markle's desire to be closer to King Charles and foster family relationships for their children influenced the move. King Charles, who is undergoing cancer treatment, was reportedly informed of their plans four days before the news became public. Despite this, the monarch is said to be eager to spend more time with his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.

William and Middleton have not issued public statements regarding the Sussexes' relocation. Royal reporter Tom Sykes told Page Six that the move represents a significant challenge for William, potentially creating "serious risks for the monarchy" and additional "challenges" due to the existing estrangement between the brothers.

Another royal insider, Kinsey Schofield, speculated that financial considerations and inheritance might be factors in Harry and Markle's decision. "There is a suspicion within Prince William’s orbit that Harry and Meghan understand the clock is ticking and want to re-establish their position, influence, and proximity to the monarchy while Charles is still King," Schofield stated. The assessment suggests Harry is seeking to rejoin the royal fold before William ascends to the throne, as William is expected to be less accommodating.

This development follows a history of public disclosures by Harry and Meghan, including their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, their 2022 Netflix docuseries, and Harry's 2023 memoir "Spare." Meghan Markle also made accusations of racism within the royal family during her interview with Winfrey. Consequently, Prince William and Kate Middleton have reportedly severed ties with the Sussexes and have shown no indication of reconciliation, even as the Sussexes have reconnected with King Charles.
