The village of Bédar in southern Spain's Almería province has been left in ruins, with homes razed to the ground and the landscape described as "a sea of black" by BBC correspondent Nick Beake.

Wildfires spread rapidly through the region on Thursday, prompting a large response from hundreds of firefighters. As of Thursday, the blazes have claimed the lives of 12 people. Local authorities reported that wildfires have consumed approximately 6,600 hectares (16,300 acres) of land.

This summer's intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching around 40C (104F), has fueled wildfires across Southern Europe, notably impacting France, Portugal, and Spain. The extreme conditions have created a challenging environment for containing the fires and have devastated communities like Bédar.
