Five members of a Utah family, including a fire captain and his three sons, died in a flash flood over the weekend. The family had been out for a day of hiking in the southern part of the state when the incident occurred.

Provo Fire & Rescue announced the death of Captain Spencer Long and confirmed that his wife and three sons also perished. A daughter who did not accompany them on the outing is the sole surviving member of the immediate family. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office stated that heavy rains are believed to have caused the flooding.

The family had arrived at a campground near Bicknell, Utah, for a day trip on Friday. Officials were alerted to the situation around 5 p.m. local time that day, discovering one deceased male victim. A subsequent search on Friday and Saturday located the remaining four victims, confirming their deaths.

A GoFundMe page identified the victims as Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their sons Reid, Thayne, and Gage. The fundraising page also noted the profound impact the tragedy has had on their surviving daughter.
