A 23‑year‑old Ukrainian woman who emigrated to Charlotte in 2022 was stabbed to death while riding a light rail train on the evening of Aug. 22, authorities and her family said, prompting grief, tributes and renewed questions about safety on public transit.
Police have charged Decarlos Brown Jr. with first‑degree murder in the killing of Iryna Zarutska. Prosecutors described Brown as a career criminal, and a judge denied bond; he remains in custody. Surveillance video released by police shows a man lunging at Zarutska from behind as she sat on the train, then cuts ahead to footage of the suspect carrying a knife that appeared to be dripping with blood.
Zarutska, who had arrived in the United States with her mother and two siblings seeking safety from the war in Ukraine, was returning from a shift at a south Charlotte pizzeria shortly before 10 p.m. when the attack occurred, family members and the restaurant said. The pizzeria where she worked paid tribute to her on social media, calling her death a "tremendous loss" and saying employees had kept a candle burning in her memory.
Her family, in an online fundraiser and obituary, described Zarutska as a gifted and passionate artist who graduated from Synergy College in Kyiv with a degree in art and restoration. They said she had embraced her new life in the United States, learning English quickly, working to support herself, and hoping to become a veterinary assistant. Friends and acquaintances posted messages on social media recalling her creativity, warmth and love of animals.
A rideshare driver who said he once gave Zarutska a lift after a shift described her as sweet and optimistic. Photographs shared by friends show Zarutska in Kyiv and in Charlotte, including an image of the city's skyline she posted online nine days before the slaying.
Investigators released the surveillance footage as part of the criminal case; the recording shows the attack occurring without an apparent provocation and indicates the suspect struck from behind. Authorities have not publicly detailed a motive. Prosecutors’ characterization of the suspect’s criminal history was included in court filings, and officials said the defendant will face formal proceedings in Mecklenburg County.
The killing has drawn local and national attention. Some social media commentary linked the violence to broader debates about public safety in Charlotte, but city officials and law enforcement have urged restraint while the investigation and legal process continue. The pizzeria and others who knew Zarutska emphasized personal memories of her rather than politics, praising her work ethic and the impressions she left on customers and friends.
Zarutska’s family said she often cared for neighbors’ pets, enjoyed sculpting and designing clothing, and was happiest when surrounded by family. They asked for privacy as they grieve and for support to cover funeral expenses and related costs through their fundraiser.
Court records show Brown was formally charged in connection with the incident and remains jailed after a judge denied bond. Prosecutors will present evidence at upcoming hearings as the criminal case proceeds through the Mecklenburg County court system.
The police investigation into the events on the light rail and the circumstances leading up to the attack remains active, and authorities have asked anyone with additional information or relevant footage to contact them. Local transit officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on security measures aboard trains following the killing.
