Temperatures are set to fall significantly across the United Kingdom this weekend, bringing a noticeable cool-down as the country's fifth widespread heatwave of the year concludes. The shift in weather is attributed to a cold front moving southeastward, introducing cooler north-westerly winds and scattered showers.

While some areas in southeast England might still experience temperatures reaching the heatwave threshold of 27 or 28 degrees Celsius on Saturday, most regions will see a drop of 10 to 13 degrees Celsius compared to Thursday's highs. For much of the UK, away from the southeast, daytime highs are forecast to be between 16 and 24 degrees Celsius. These temperatures are considered average for mid-August but may feel considerably cooler after the recent exceptional heat.

The impact of the prolonged heatwave has been felt across daily life, contributing to wildfires, transport disruptions, and an increase in heat-related deaths. The coming cooler weather will be a welcome change for many.

Most areas are expected to remain dry with sunny spells, although some showers are anticipated in northwest Scotland and East Anglia. The change in conditions follows a period of intense heat that has affected various parts of the country throughout the summer.
