Rangers and veterinarians from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) have begun translocating endangered Nubian giraffes from Murchison Falls National Park to Ajai Wildlife Reserve. The operation, which commenced on Wednesday, aims to expand the range of the species and diversify the wildlife population at Ajai.

Moving giraffes presents significant logistical challenges due to their height and unique physiology. To facilitate the translocation, the animals are sedated by veterinarians. Once sedated, each giraffe is carefully lowered to the ground, its eyes and ears are covered, and it is continuously monitored before being loaded onto specially designed transport trucks.

This initiative is expected to see a total of 12 Nubian giraffes relocated to Ajai Wildlife Reserve, located near Arua in northwestern Uganda. The operation is being led by Dr. Patrick Atimnedi, UWA's assistant commissioner in charge of veterinary services.

Nubian giraffes are classified as critically endangered, making conservation efforts such as this translocation crucial for their survival and the health of their ecosystems.
