The Metropolitan Police arrested a 42-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man in London on suspicion of assisting Iran's intelligence service. The arrests occurred Wednesday afternoon at residential addresses in the city's north and north-west areas.
These detentions are part of an ongoing investigation into suspected National Security Act offenses. Police had previously conducted searches at residential addresses in the north and north-west London areas on June 24, which led to the recent arrests.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated that while the arrests might cause concern, there is no believed imminent threat to the wider public. She noted a significant increase in the tempo of national security investigations linked to state threats over the past year, describing the current investigation as a continuation of this trend. Flanagan emphasized the police's commitment to taking action if any activity is suspected of threatening the safety of the UK or its public.
Commander Flanagan also reminded the public that the overall terrorism threat level remains at severe and urged continued vigilance, encouraging anyone who sees or hears anything suspicious to report it to the authorities.
