Tropical Storm Maysak made landfall on China's southern island province of Hainan on Friday, prompting the suspension of flights, rail services, and ferries. The storm arrived on the southeastern coast around 6:20 p.m. local time, with maximum sustained winds near its center measured at 23 meters per second, equivalent to 51 mph.
Maysak is forecast to bring torrential rain to Hainan, with some areas expected to receive up to 350 mm (about 13.8 inches) of rainfall within a 24-hour period. The storm's impact is also expected to extend to Guangdong, Guizhou, and Hunan provinces, as well as the Guangxi region.
Transportation across Hainan was significantly disrupted. Sanya Phoenix International Airport halted all takeoffs and landings starting at 5 p.m. local time, after 92 flights had already been canceled by mid-morning. All round-island high-speed rail services were also stopped for the day. Passenger ferry services operating across the Qiongzhou Strait were suspended beginning at 2 a.m. and are expected to remain halted for one to two days.
Authorities have called for heightened monitoring and evacuations from areas deemed at risk, describing flood prevention efforts as "severe and complex." Mage
