A freight train struck a double-deck passenger bus early Monday in Atlacomulco, northwest of Mexico City, killing at least eight people and injuring 45, authorities said.

The State of Mexico civil defense agency said via X that rescue teams and other authorities were still working at the scene in an industrial area with large warehouses and factories. Officials did not immediately provide further details about how the crash occurred.

Video circulated on social platforms showed the bus slowly crossing the railroad tracks amid heavy traffic when a fast-moving freight train suddenly appeared and struck the bus near its midpoint. The train’s momentum carried the bus along the tracks before both vehicles moved out of the camera frame. Another video showed the bus later at rest to the side of the tracks with much of its roof torn away; people could be seen on the vehicle’s upper level as the train came to a halt.

Rescue workers and emergency responders were photographed and filmed at the scene tending to victims. Images from the scene show stretchers and personnel carrying injured people away from the wreckage. Local authorities reported 45 people hurt and said at least eight people had died.

There were no visible crossing gates or automated warning signals in the footage shared online. Prior to the collision, cars could be seen moving across the tracks as traffic advanced.

State and local emergency services took part in the response, and investigators were expected to examine the site to determine the sequence of events and the factors that led to the collision. Authorities often analyze train speed, signaling, road and track conditions, and whether drivers or train crews complied with applicable safety measures.

Atlacomulco is northwest of Mexico City and includes industrial zones with warehouses and factories; the civil defense agency’s initial statement noted the location but provided no timeline for the investigation. Officials have not indicated whether criminal charges would be pursued or whether the train was carrying freight that could complicate rescue operations.

Family members, local officials and rescue teams remained at the scene into Monday as authorities continued recovery and assistance efforts. Further information, including a definitive toll and details about the injured, was expected as emergency services completed on-site work and investigations proceeded.
