Rescue operations are facing significant challenges in reaching 13 workers trapped inside a tunnel following an explosion at a hydropower project in northeastern India. The incident, which occurred approximately 1.5 kilometers into the tunnel, has already resulted in 12 confirmed fatalities.
NDRF Deputy Commandant Vivek Kumar stated that toxic gases, including carbon monoxide, have been detected at the site, severely limiting visibility. Rescue teams are permitted to enter the disaster zone only for short shifts of about 15 minutes due to the dangerous gas exposure, a measure that is significantly slowing progress. Inclement weather on Monday night also delayed initial rescue efforts, according to police superintendent Sonam Doma Bhutia.
Sikkim's Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who was present at the scene, indicated that the explosion was triggered by a build-up of methane gas. He confirmed that a formal investigation into the accident will be conducted.
