A British TikTok influencer, Brooke Keisha George, 23, is detained in Dubai and faces a potential firing squad after being charged with the premeditated murder of 26-year-old Bill Treeby. Human rights group Detained in Dubai and George's mother, Tess George, assert that the killing was an act of self-defense after Treeby allegedly attacked George and confiscated her passport.
Detained in Dubai stated that George should be treated as a domestic violence survivor, while her mother expressed fears that her daughter will not receive a fair trial in the Gulf state. Treeby's family, also from Kent, England, have expressed devastation over his death. His wife, Ellie, posted on Facebook, "A part of me died with you. The world is cruel."
Brooke George, who had amassed over 100,000 followers on TikTok with content about beauty and lifestyle, met Treeby online. According to her mother, George was lured to Dubai and subjected to violence on her second visit. Tess George claims that other men were present at Treeby's apartment and that her daughter became scared when one began accompanying them. She is appealing for Dubai police to trace this individual, believing he may have witnessed Treeby's behavior.
According to an account provided by Detained in Dubai, George alleges that Treeby became increasingly controlling and abusive during her second visit to Dubai. She reportedly discovered he had booked her a one-way ticket, alarming her and making her want to return home. Tess George noted that her daughter seemed uncharacteristically quiet the day before the incident.
Following a night out, George claims Treeby assaulted her in a car on the way back to his apartment, continuing the attack inside. Detained in Dubai reported that George, fearing for her life and desperate to retrieve her passport, grabbed a kitchen knife and acted in self-defense. After the incident, she fled the apartment with her passport and phone and was arrested by authorities on June 22.
Her family has alleged that George experienced a distressing ordeal while detained, including being forced to strip in front of male officers and making statements without legal counsel. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed they are supporting a British national detained in the UAE and are in contact with local authorities and the family.
Bill Treeby had a history of legal troubles in the UK. He had a previous conviction for attacking a woman and was due to stand trial on drug charges. His family has also experienced tragedy; his father was murdered in 2009, an incident that led to convictions for murder against his uncle and cousins, with his uncle dying in prison before sentencing.
This case highlights the risks faced by individuals, particularly young women, drawn to Dubai by the allure of influencer culture, where behind the glitzy facade, strict laws and severe punishments can apply. Other British nationals have faced lengthy detentions in the UAE for offenses including consensual sex and possession of CBD vape oil.
