British police are investigating the theft of approximately 70,000 pints of Guinness, with an estimated value of $155,000, which were stolen from an industrial park in Runcorn, near Liverpool. The incident occurred on a Monday night when two drivers reportedly arrived at the depot and loaded two trailer loads of the Irish stout onto their vehicles.
Authorities are appealing for information to locate the missing beer, which was destined for distribution to pubs. Detective Sergeant Gary McClatchy of the Cheshire Constabulary stated, “It is famously said that ‘Guinness is good for you,’ but that is only the case when it has been bought and paid for. We will settle for nothing less than the full recovery of all the items stolen.”
This theft follows a similar incident in Southern California where 34,000 cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon were stolen from a warehouse. The brewers of Pabst Blue Ribbon offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of their product, issuing a public statement to the thieves: “To the thief: we don’t fault you for wanting to brag to your friends how much PBR you have, we just wish you obtained it the honorable way.” The company also emphasized the seriousness of the claim, adding, “P.S. This is real, and we are deadly serious.”
