A teenage boy killed at least seven people and wounded more than 20 others in a horrific attack at a school in Thailand on Friday, before dying by suicide. The assailant, armed with a knife, targeted a childcare center, authorities reported.
Among the victims were at least 22 children and a teacher. The attacker also killed his grandfather and grandmother before ending his own life, police said.
Officials stated that the suspect had researched mass shootings online and that the firearm used in the killings belonged to his grandfather and was legally registered.
In the wake of the tragedy, Thai officials are initiating new safety protocols. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that a new law will restrict firearm ownership to government officials on duty. The Ministry of Education has committed to significantly enhancing school security measures and introducing programs to protect students.
Financial assistance will be provided to the victims' families. Those who lost loved ones will receive 20,000 Thai Baht (approximately $600), while those injured will receive 5,000 Thai Baht (approximately $150).
The suspect's father told CNN that he was unaware of any warning signs or violent tendencies in his son. "My son was guilty ... he hurt people," the father said. "I have nothing more to say. But I still don’t know why he did that."
