An airline employee has been arrested and charged by Australian police for allegedly attempting to import more than 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of heroin into Melbourne. The 26-year-old woman, who was on duty on an international flight, arrived at Melbourne Airport on Thursday.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) stated that she raised suspicions during a baggage screening. An X-ray and subsequent examination revealed white powder concealed within the linings of her 12 tote bags. Initial testing indicated the powder was heroin.

The amount of heroin seized has an estimated street value of approximately 500,000 Australian dollars, which is about $345,000.

The woman faces charges of importing and possessing the drug, offenses that carry a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment. She is scheduled to appear in a Melbourne court in September.

"The AFP remains unwavering in its efforts to target individuals who use their employment or community standing to support drug trafficking," said AFP Acting Commander Simone Butcher.

While the police have not released the woman's name or the airline she works for, Thailand's national carrier, Thai Airways, confirmed that one of its employees was detained in Melbourne. The airline stated it is cooperating with authorities and will take decisive action if misconduct is confirmed.

Thai Airways also reiterated its policy that employees are strictly prohibited from possessing, importing, transporting, or being involved with narcotics or any illegal substances. The airline indicated it is coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure the employee has access to basic legal rights.
