Police have initiated a murder investigation following the death of a 17-year-old boy who was stabbed in Luton. Authorities were called to Kingsway Recreation Ground around 6:30 p.m. on Friday following reports of disorder.
Upon arrival, officers observed 'a number of teenagers' in possession of large knives. The teenage victim was transported to the hospital with multiple stab wounds but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. The victim has not yet been formally identified, but his family is receiving support from specially trained officers.
As a result of the incident, one teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and is currently in police custody. A second teenager was also arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and remains in the hospital with serious injuries.
Detectives from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward to assist with their investigation.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Gardener stated, "Horrific violence in Luton has sadly cost a teenage boy his life today. Our thoughts are first and foremost with the loved ones of the boy who lost his life in such tragic circumstances."
He added that incidents of this nature have a significant impact on communities. An increased police presence and high-visibility patrols are currently active in the area.
Gardener urged anyone who witnessed the events or has relevant information to contact the police. Authorities are also aware of images and videos circulating on social media and have requested that the public refrain from sharing such material, as it could be distressing to the family and potentially vital evidence for the investigation.
