The Sydney Marathon is set to award participants with medals that mistakenly feature the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, instead of Sydney's own Allianz Stadium. Organizers have embraced the error, stating, "It's a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique."
The design error was noticed on social media, with users pointing out that the stadium engraved on the medal does not resemble Sydney's Allianz Stadium. Sydney's venue has a flatter facade with long bronze fins, while Munich's Allianz Arena is characterized by thousands of diamond-shaped inflatable cushions. The medal depicts the latter.
Despite the mix-up, organizers expressed that the error has provided a talking point, mostly in good spirits. Germany's Allianz Arena also joined in the humor, posting on Instagram, "Oh wow, we didn't have that on our bingo card! Perhaps they tried to find something else they had in common: Allianz Arena -- Sydney Opera -- Unique Architecture -- Both are worth a visit!"
The medal's reverse side features a gold and indigo pattern designed by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, which has been widely praised. Killian confirmed that he was not involved in the design of the stadium engraving.
The 2026 Sydney Marathon is expected to attract approximately 40,000 runners, building on over 120,000 ballot entries. The event has also seen record participation and fundraising this year. The course itself is a 42.2km (26.2 mile) route that passes recognizable Sydney landmarks such as the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
