A 45-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal assault of a 74-year-old grandfather in Sydney's southwest. The victim, a father of six, was found unconscious on Orchardleigh Street in Yennora around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday. Emergency responders treated him at the scene before he was transported to Westmead Hospital in critical condition.

Police believe the man was attacked while on his regular morning walk. He died in the hospital on Monday, prompting authorities to arrest the 45-year-old suspect. The charges against the accused include murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. He also faces a charge of common assault related to an unrelated incident in Guildford earlier in July.

Detectives conducted a search warrant at a Carlingford address in northwest Sydney on Sunday afternoon, where several items believed to be connected to the assault were seized. The accused is scheduled to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.
