Surgeons in Kumamoto, Japan, persevered through a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck while a patient was undergoing surgery. CCTV footage captured the intense moments as medical staff grappled to stabilize the operating table and protect the patient amidst violent tremors.
The surgical team struggled to maintain their footing as the operating room shook, causing equipment to rattle and lights to flicker. One staff member fell while attempting to steady machinery, while others held onto the operating table to prevent it from shifting.
According to Japanese media, the surgical procedure was briefly paused but ultimately resumed and concluded successfully. The hospital resumed normal operations on August 5.
The powerful earthquake, which hit Japan's southern island of Kyushu on July 28, resulted in approximately 38 deaths and over 120 injuries. The tremor caused widespread damage across Kumamoto Prefecture, including the collapse of homes, buildings, and roads, and led to significant power and water outages for thousands of residents.
In the aftermath, more than 79,000 people were left without running water, and around 3,500 homes remained without power for several days amidst high temperatures. Approximately 9,000 residents sought refuge in emergency shelters.
The earthquake's force triggered an explosion at a shopping center in Kashima Town, leading to seven fatalities. The town of Hikawa was severely impacted, with estimates suggesting over 800 of its 4,500 homes were destroyed or damaged. Many displaced residents stayed in their cars.
Videos emerged showing the quake's destructive power, with collapsing buildings, buckling roads, and an overturned train. Rescuers worked through rubble after an explosion at the Aeon shopping center in Kashima Town. Images also depicted a collapsed bridge section in Yatsushiro City and derailed freight wagons at Yatsushiro Station.
Major infrastructure, including sections of the Kyushu Expressway, sustained severe damage. Companies such as TSMC, Sony, and Fujifilm evacuated staff from their plants in the affected area as a precautionary measure. The tremor was also felt in South Korea.
