A mother in Scotland has been sentenced to six years in prison for the death of her infant daughter, who was subjected to fatal heat exposure from a hairdryer. Courtney Gartshore, 28, was found guilty of culpable homicide in the death of her three-month-old daughter, Dahlia-Rose Gartshore.
Emergency services responding to a call at Gartshore's home in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, on September 30, 2023, initially believed the child had been burned in a fire due to the severity of her injuries. Investigators determined that Gartshore, who had been drinking while solely responsible for the infant, applied "significant and sustained heat" to the child's head and body with a hairdryer, leading to fatal injuries. The infant was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gartshore was arrested in November 2023, and convicted last month at the High Court in Aberdeen. Detective Inspector James Callander of Police Scotland stated, "Children are defenseless and should be protected. The death of any child is particularly harrowing, but a child’s death at the hands of a parent is incredibly disturbing."
Further controversy has emerged regarding Gartshore's conduct while on bail awaiting trial. She was permitted to travel to Turkey in May, where photos posted online by her mother's boyfriend showed Gartshore on vacation, described as "family" and "party time." Additional images depicted her in a mud bath, at karaoke, and making a vulgar gesture to the camera.
Scottish Conservatives criticized the ruling Scottish National Party (SNP), suggesting that Gartshore's overseas trip demonstrated a "relentless weakening of the justice system" under their governance.
