Scotland is grappling with the aftermath of a severe lightning storm that unleashed more than 41,000 strikes in a 24-hour period, following a recent heatwave. The intense electrical activity, accompanied by high winds, hailstones, and flash flooding, caused significant damage to homes and disrupted public transportation.

One family in Dalkeith, Midlothian, was forced to evacuate their home when the roof caught fire, an incident investigators believe was caused by a lightning strike. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deployed multiple appliances to the scene to combat the blaze. "I didn’t know where the smoke was coming from, so I opened the back door and looked up and there were flames coming through the roof," said occupant Stuart Drummond, who described waking to an "almighty crack."

Campers at Dornoch Caravan and Camping Park in Ross-shire described the storm as unprecedented, with lightning illuminating the sky like "strobe lighting" for nearly an hour. "I have never seen the like of it before," said site owner Darren Redfern. "Anyone in a tent, didn’t sleep in a tent that night."

The disruption extended to the railway network. ScotRail passengers traveling from Helensburgh to Edinburgh Waverly were evacuated after a lightning strike caused an electrical fault on board a train, leading to service termination and compensation claims for delayed passengers. Edinburgh Airport also reported ongoing impacts on air traffic services due to the severe weather.

Heavy downpours contributed to treacherous driving conditions, with over two inches of rain recorded in 24 hours in some areas, such as Achnagart, Ross-shire. The Dornoch Bridge was subject to warnings for motorists due to high winds.

The intense weather followed a period of high temperatures, with some areas reaching nearly 30C. Meteorologists anticipate a shift towards more unsettled weather, with cooler temperatures and scattered showers expected in the coming week, though not described as desperately unsettled.

Social media users shared images and videos of the dramatic light show, with some likening the sky's illumination to scenes from the film "Back to the Future." Despite the chaos, many described the electrical display as "beautiful," "breathtaking," and "amazing."
