Queen Mary of Denmark publicly addressed a controversy over her daughter Princess Isabella’s explicit festival T‑shirt while King Frederik did not comment, a communications expert told Danish media, calling the monarch’s brief response a deliberate and effective way to defuse criticism.

The episode stems from Princess Isabella, 18, appearing at the Smukfest music festival on Aug. 7 wearing merchandise from Danish hip‑hop group Suspekt bearing a slogan that translates into English as “f****d him yesterday.” During a visit to the island of Samsø on Aug. 28, the royal couple was asked about the T‑shirt by TV 2. Queen Mary, 53, replied — in a statement translated in media reports — “My first thought was — is she completely gone? But let’s put it this way... some decisions are better than others.” King Frederik, 57, remained beside her but did not speak.

Anna Thygesen, a Danish communications expert quoted by the tabloid B.T., praised Mary’s answer as “brilliant” for combining humour and authority while acknowledging that young people sometimes make mistakes. Thygesen said the remark removed much of the sting from criticism by addressing the matter succinctly and in a way that many parents could relate to.

Thygesen told B.T. that the decision for Mary to handle the response was likely deliberate, arguing that the queen’s style of delivery — a short, pointed response that mixes a joke with a cautionary note — suited the situation better than a longer, formal statement might have. She also noted that Mary’s reuse of a phrase linked to a 2021 incident, when a hot‑mic picked up Princess Isabella telling her mother “Are you completely gone?” during a royal photo call, added a layer of irony that resonated with observers.

The expert said the approach appealed to different audiences: those who found the T‑shirt humorous and those who considered the episode overblown. Thygesen added that ignoring the episode entirely would not fit a modern royal identity and that a “no‑comment” posture was never a viable option for the couple.

Members of the public and royal‑family supporters posted approving reactions online after the interview, praising Mary’s calm tone and concise handling of the question. Comments shared on social platforms included descriptions such as “perfect,” “diplomatic response” and “Mother goals!” while others said the queen struck the right balance between disapproval and discretion.

Princess Isabella was last seen at official engagements with her family in late July. The royal couple did not expand further on the matter during the televised interview, and Danish media coverage has focused on Mary’s choice to address the incident directly while Frederik remained silent.
