A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia's Pacific coast on Monday, causing significant damage and injuring an unspecified number of people, according to provincial governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba.
The quake occurred at 07:34 local time (12:34 GMT) at a depth of 96 kilometers (60 miles), reported Colombia's geological service. Its epicenter was located 5 kilometers east of the village of San José del Palmar.
The tremors were felt hundreds of kilometers away, including in the capital, Bogotá, where several buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Footage shared by Colombian newspaper El Tiempo from Manizales, a city in the country's coffee region, showed a collapsed building with people gathered nearby, concerned about potential entrapment.
Governor Córdoba expressed concern about the possibility of aftershocks following the powerful seismic event.
This earthquake comes less than two months after twin earthquakes devastated northern Venezuela, resulting in over 6,100 fatalities.
