Twelve people were killed and ten injured when a Polish tourist bus crashed and overturned on Hungary's M3 motorway early Sunday. The accident occurred at approximately 1:00 AM, about 90 miles northeast of Budapest.
Authorities suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The driver has since been taken into custody. Of the 57 passengers and two drivers on board, twelve succumbed to their injuries, and ten others sustained wounds.
Images from the scene show the bus lying at the bottom of a grass verge on the side of the motorway. Suitcases and personal belongings were scattered across the ditch next to the wreckage. Some passengers were trapped under the vehicle after it flipped.
All passengers on the bus were Polish citizens, according to confirmation from the Polish Foreign Ministry. The bus had departed from Poland's southeastern Podkarpackie region, with passengers returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki expressed his condolences, stating, "I join the families and loved ones of the victims in prayer and deep sympathy." Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar also offered his sympathies to the victims' families and acknowledged the swift response of rescue workers.
