King Harald V of Norway died early Friday morning at the age of 89, concluding a 35-year reign. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, has officially succeeded him as King Haakon VIII and has met with his government.

Mourners gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo to lay flowers and pay tribute to the late king. Harald had been receiving treatment at the national hospital for a rare blood condition.

On Friday evening, the coffin carrying the late king was moved from the hospital to the Royal Palace, an event observed by hospital staff and crowds lining the streets.

Tributes have poured in from both within Norway and internationally. King Charles III of the United Kingdom shared his "most heartfelt condolences" following the news of Harald's death.
