A newborn baby girl was discovered deceased in a Sheffield residence and died as a result of stab wounds, South Yorkshire Police announced. Detectives are currently questioning five individuals in connection with the infant's murder.

Officers were called to a property in Holywell Heights, Wincobank, at approximately 5:58 a.m. on Sunday following a report of concerns for the baby's safety. A forensic post-mortem examination later confirmed that the child's death was caused by stab wounds.

Initially, seven people, ranging in age from 15 to 38, were arrested on suspicion of murder. Two individuals, aged 26 and 37, have since been released on bail. A warrant was secured by detectives to extend the detention period for the remaining five suspects.

The discovery has reportedly shaken the local neighborhood. Residents described the three-bedroom property as frequently housing a large number of people. One neighbor indicated that the house had been rented by a Slovakian family who had moved in approximately eight months prior. This resident estimated that up to 12 individuals, including children and adults, sometimes resided in the home.

Another neighbor observed that the number of occupants appeared unusually high, with people appearing "crammed in" at times.

The neighbor who spoke about the Slovakian family also stated she had not noticed anyone who appeared to be pregnant at the address. She claimed that the occupants had departed the property before police arrived on Sunday morning. According to her account, the eldest son and his girlfriend left around 4 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the mother and approximately five other individuals shortly before 6 a.m., shortly before police arrived.

She later reported seeing officers carrying the infant, wrapped in blankets, from the house around 1 p.m.

Police forensics teams were present at the property on Monday, with cordons established around the residence. A cadaver dog was also deployed to search surrounding areas. Detectives are continuing their work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the baby's death and identify those responsible.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward stated that the incident is deeply distressing for all involved, including emergency services and the community. He emphasized the police commitment to pursuing all lines of inquiry to secure justice for the baby.

Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight urged the public to avoid speculation, assuring residents that a dedicated team is working to ensure justice for the infant. Police are appealing for anyone with information pertinent to the investigation to come forward.
