Police are investigating the death of a newborn boy whose body was discovered in a rubbish bin at a unit block in Sydney's west. Emergency services were called to Harrow Road in Auburn on Monday morning after a resident found the infant while disposing of garbage.
The newborn was found naked inside a plastic garbage bag in one of the complex's bins, located across the street from a local school. Authorities believe the baby may have been in the bin for up to 36 hours before the discovery.
Detective Acting Superintendent Darren Sly stated that examinations are underway to determine the cause and time of the baby's death. He emphasized that the primary concern for law enforcement is the welfare of the infant's mother.
'Our only priority at the moment is the welfare of that mother and ensuring that she does go immediately to a hospital,' Sly told reporters. He added that any potential police action is secondary to ensuring her well-being. Police have expressed serious concerns for her welfare.
Detectives have initiated door-to-door inquiries in the surrounding units and are reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to locate the mother and gather more information about the circumstances. A crime scene was established at the unit block.
The discovery has sent shockwaves through the local community. Local business owners and residents expressed their distress and concern, with some contacting nearby schools to inquire about the situation.
Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed urged the community to support one another and check on individuals who might be struggling. She extended her condolences to the mother and her family, emphasizing the need for authorities to conduct their investigation undisturbed.
Police are appealing to the public for any information or relevant dashcam or phone footage that could assist their investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Auburn Police or Crime Stoppers.
