A New York mother, Jamey Carney, died from suffocation in her Ireland home, according to a postmortem examination. Her body was discovered by her 13-year-old daughter in Killarney on Tuesday morning. While initial reports suggested a violent assault, State Pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan determined suffocation as the cause of death.
Irish police have launched a murder investigation and are seeking Ahmad Alsaqer, 28, Carney's boyfriend and an asylum seeker, who is believed to have fled the country shortly after her death. Authorities fear that DNA evidence found at the scene may complicate the investigation, as Alsaqer had been a regular visitor to Carney's home.
Alsaqer reportedly left Killarney for Dublin by bus around 3 a.m. and may have taken a flight to Istanbul, Turkey. Police are investigating Alsaqer's contacts in the Middle East and have issued alerts at ports and airports, concerned he had a significant head start before Carney's body was found. Sources indicated that Alsaqer might have left the country without his passport due to his pending asylum application.
Carney, 43, had relocated to Ireland from Westchester County, New York, in 2021 with her daughter. Her cousin described her as a "most caring humanitarian." Carney and Alsaqer met approximately 18 months prior at a pro-Palestinian rally. Neighbors reported hearing a loud argument from Carney's residence on the night before her body was discovered. Police are appealing for witnesses or CCTV footage from the area between 11 p.m. Monday and 5 a.m. Tuesday.
