One of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited homes, Old Smithy Cottages in Brewood, Staffordshire, is set to go to auction with a starting bid exceeding £390,000. Constructed nearly 700 years ago, the property is considered the oldest residential building in Staffordshire and among the most ancient in the United Kingdom.
Originally built as a row of cottages for workers in the market town, the five-bedroom home has evolved into a spacious family residence. It spans nearly 3,000 square feet and features two bathrooms, four reception rooms, and an open-plan kitchen. The property also includes a substantial 0.2-acre garden.
Despite its age, Old Smithy Cottages has preserved significant original features such as an Inglenook-style fireplace, exposed ceiling beams, and a moulded crown post roof. The 14th-century home is situated in the center of the village, offering proximity to schools, pubs, shops, and cafes.
James Ashworth, partner at Landwood Group, the auctioneer, described the property as a "piece of living history" and a rare opportunity to own a significant historic home that has adapted to modern needs while retaining its period character.
The home also offers convenient access to modern transportation routes, with quick links to the M54 and M6 motorways. The online auction is scheduled for June 24.
