A significant fire broke out at a scrapyard on Boulder Bridge Lane in Carlton, Barnsley, on September 5, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Fire crews from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident, which involved scrap metal and tires. The fire intensified overnight, requiring multiple crews and ten fire engines to tackle the blaze. An aerial ladder platform and operational support vehicles were also deployed at the fire's peak.

Social media footage showed plumes of smoke visible for miles around the affected area. Residents nearby were advised by the fire service to keep their doors and windows closed due to the smoke. The public was also asked to avoid the area while emergency services worked to control the inferno. The fire service stated that crews remained at the scene throughout September 6, and the road closure was expected to last for several hours.

Witnesses described the scene as resembling a volcano, with reports of continuous explosions. The smoke was visible from locations as far as 12 miles away. By the following day, the smoke had cleared, leaving the surrounding countryside covered in a layer of grey.
