A man was injured following a crane incident at the Port of Tyne in South Shields, prompting a significant emergency response. The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed its attendance at the scene.
At approximately 1:02 PM, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) received a call about the injured person. NEAS dispatched multiple resources, including three double-crewed ambulances, two clinical team leaders, a duty officer, and three vehicles from its Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). The Great North Air Ambulance Service also provided support. A HART vehicle remained at the location on standby to assist the fire service.
Images from the scene showed the tangled wreckage of a dockside crane, which appeared to have collapsed. The top section of the crane was seen resting on the control tower of an orange container ship, identified as the BG Orange. Several cargo containers on the ship had been dislodged from their original positions. The extent of the damage suggests a forceful incident. Mike from Urbex Drone View, who arrived after the incident, described the scene as "tangled wreckage" and noted the "sheer force of the incident."
