A 75-year-old man is in the hospital after confronting a man allegedly stealing from a Salvation Army charity bin in Melbourne, Australia. The incident occurred Monday evening in the suburb of Mentone.

CCTV footage captured the moment the 75-year-old man was chased and struck multiple times with a sports bat by the alleged offender. Police stated the assailant also threatened the older man and demanded his phone.

Two bystanders intervened in the assault, wrestling the alleged attacker to the ground and disarming him of the cricket bat. A struggle ensued, during which the bystanders subdued the 30-year-old suspect until police arrived and made an arrest.

Paramedics treated the 75-year-old victim at the scene before transporting him to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The 30-year-old suspect was charged with attempted armed robbery, assault, and affray. He was remanded in custody and scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Following the incident, a note was affixed to the window of the Salvation Army store, commending the bystanders who intervened. "To the beautiful, strong, good Samaritans, who saved a life on Monday, and those who helped, thank you. Thank you so much," the note read.

A local shop owner expressed concerns about safety in the area, noting a rise in disturbances and individuals tampering with charity donation bins. The owner, who has operated a business on Florence Street for 15 years, cited a decline in neighborhood safety and expressed fear of confronting such individuals.
