A 41-year-old man has died after his Audi crashed into a tree during a police chase in Bedfordshire. The incident occurred on Saturday evening after police were alerted to a grey Audi with its lights off on High Street South in Dunstable.
The driver failed to stop for officers, leading to a pursuit along the A5183 toward Markyate. Shortly after, the vehicle veered off the road and collided with a tree. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Police officers administered first aid at the scene and were joined by other emergency services. Despite their efforts, the driver was pronounced dead just before 11:30 p.m.
The man's next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. In accordance with standard procedures, Bedfordshire Police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has launched an investigation into the incident.
A cordon was established on the A5 between the Kensworth Turn and Caddington while emergency services worked at the scene. The road has since reopened.
