A 22-year-old man accused of delivering a single, unprovoked punch that left a 27-year-old gymgoer in critical condition has been refused bail after a Brisbane magistrate heard the force of the blow could have been fatal without emergency surgery.

Deron Rahul Overson, of Victoria Point, appeared at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with one count of intent to cause grievous bodily harm in relation to an incident outside the Club Lime gym in Victoria Point on the night of Sept. 8, 2025. The alleged victim remains in hospital with a bleed on the brain.

The court was told Overson was one of two men arrested after police inquiries. A second man, also 22, was arrested at a Redland Bay address on Wednesday and charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, common assault, and contravening an order about information necessary to access information stored electronically. Police released footage of his arrest. He remains in custody.

Prosecutors told the court the attack was apparently unprovoked and planned. Magistrate Patrina Clohessy said material before the court indicated the strike rendered the complainant unconscious immediately and that he struck the ground. "The evidence before the court suggests had that medical treatment not been performed he would have died," the magistrate said, adding the victim’s condition remained critical.

The court heard police allege the alleged attack was motivated by a grudge held by Overson’s co-accused after the victim lost employment. Prosecutors said police also possess video footage of an unrelated incident at a Bunnings car park in which Overson allegedly approached and punched another man without warning; the co-accused was heard commenting that the violence was "funny." No charges have been laid in relation to that alleged Bunnings incident.

Overson handed himself into police on Friday and has no recorded criminal history, his solicitor Mark Butler told the court. Butler said his client had not attempted to flee, admitted himself to police knowing they were investigating a serious charge, and was willing to "face what was coming." He proposed bail conditions including a curfew, no-contact orders and reporting requirements.

Magistrate Clohessy rejected the proposed bail on the basis that Overson’s alleged actions were "inexplicable" and posed an unacceptable risk to community safety. The magistrate said the potential harm to others was "so great" she could not accept the bail conditions put forward by the defence.

The matter was adjourned and is due to return to Cleveland Magistrates Court on Thursday, when Overson and his co-accused will be mentioned. Police investigators continue to examine video evidence and other material related to the incidents and the alleged motive.

Queensland Police have not released the names of the second accused beyond his age and Redland Bay location. No further details about the condition of the injured man were provided at the hearing beyond the description of his critical status and the surgical treatment he received.
