Police have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with a racist incident that occurred last month in Glasgow. The arrest follows a raid on a residential street where officers were seen escorting a man into a police van. The incident involved a traffic cone being thrown at a delivery driver.
The event coincided with the opening weekend of the Commonwealth Games and followed an anti-immigration protest. Police Scotland reported that "disparate groups" engaged in violence, disorder, intimidation, and hate-motivated offenses across various locations in the city. Approximately 1,700 people were reported to be in attendance, and an operation was in place to ensure public safety and minimize disruption.
The victim, Yaqoob, a delivery driver who moved to Glasgow from Pakistan, told BBC Scotland News that he felt afraid to leave his home or return to work after the incident. He was on a delivery from a local restaurant when he encountered dozens of protestors. While Yaqoob stated that he has largely found Scotland to be a welcoming place, his recent experience was described as "not welcoming at all."
