A 19-year-old man has admitted to a stabbing on Barry Island beach that resulted in a 17-year-old victim having his leg amputated. Idris Ahmed, from Riverside in Cardiff, changed his plea to guilty on Tuesday at Newport Crown Court.

The incident occurred on a bank holiday in May 2026 when the victim was visiting the beach with friends. Ahmed attacked the teenager without warning after the victim attempted to de-escalate a dispute between Ahmed's group and his own.

Ahmed had previously denied charges of grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a knife. He is scheduled for sentencing on November 27.

The 17-year-old victim told the court that he had experienced significant blood loss and lapsed in and out of consciousness immediately following the stabbing. He was airlifted to a hospital where he underwent four surgeries. Despite multiple transfusions, oxygen was not adequately reaching the injured leg, leading to the decision for a through-the-knee amputation.
