A legal dispute ignited by Claire Kellerman, the adopted daughter of the late Oscar-nominated actress Sally Kellerman, has created significant financial strain for a community charity on the small Scottish island of Great Bernera. The conflict began earlier this year when Kellerman, who moved to the island from California approximately three years ago, initiated legal action against the Bernera Community Cafe after her dog was refused entry.
Kellerman, 62, claims her Australian cattle dog, Tarkina, is a service animal due to a disability stemming from childhood trauma. She reportedly pointed to this when attempting to bring the dog into the cafe, despite signs indicating “Assistance Dogs Welcome” and “Service Dogs Only.”
According to reports, Kellerman has been accused by local business owners of threatening lawsuits after being denied entry with her dog, which some locals describe as having a history of chasing other animals. The initial lawsuit was filed against the Great Bernera Community Development Trust, costing the organization approximately $7,000 before Kellerman amended the complaint to target the Bernera Community Association (BCA). The BCA manages the community center, which houses the cafe, a doctor’s office, a fire station, and a museum.
The BCA is reportedly facing bankruptcy as a result of the legal feud. Kellerman's legal costs are currently covered by the Scottish Legal Aid Board. In a statement to Sky News, Kellerman indicated that the potential closure of the community center was not her concern.
Politicians and community members have expressed outrage over the situation. Andrew Crichton, Member of Parliament for the Western Isles, characterized Kellerman’s actions as "vexatious," while local leader Donald MacKinnon described the case as "absurd."
Sally Kellerman, known for her role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the 1970 film “MAS*H,” died in February 2022 at the age of 84. Representatives for Kellerman and the BCA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
