Yanis Yushvaev, identified as the head of the Caucasian Mafia and a prominent figure in Israel's criminal underworld, was killed in a targeted shooting at a gas station in Caesarea on Sunday. Video footage appears to show an assailant, disguised in a gray hoodie and possibly a silicone mask, approaching Yushvaev from behind and firing at close range as he exited the establishment with two companions.

Medics arriving at the scene found Yushvaev without a pulse and suffering from severe injuries, leading to his pronouncement of death. Yushvaev, who had previously survived an assassination attempt 10 years prior, maintained that he was a businessman who owned a restaurant. However, law enforcement officials have described him as the leader of a criminal organization involved in violent disputes.

This incident follows a series of legal entanglements for Yushvaev. He was arrested in June 2025 in connection with alleged shootings and arson attacks but was released without charges. In 2021, he was indicted on charges of threatening to shoot a businessman who failed to pay $1.1 million. He was also arrested at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport six months prior to his death upon returning from Moscow. Authorities had reportedly gathered intelligence suggesting Yushvaev was planning to harm rivals, but no charges were filed.

Israeli police have previously expressed frustration with the difficulty of prosecuting Yushvaev, noting his caution in communications to avoid wiretaps and the loyalty he demanded from associates. He was known to be arrested numerous times on suspicion of involvement in shootings, grenade attacks, and car burnings, but consistently evaded conviction, according to reports from The Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post.
