At least six people have died and 130 remain unaccounted for after a ferry capsized in severe weather in the Java Sea on Sunday. The vessel, identified as the Virgo Transport 8, was en route between Java and Borneo with 243 individuals on board when it lost contact.
Officials reported that 107 people have been safely evacuated from the sea. Rescue operations, including ships and a helicopter, have been deployed to search for survivors. The Directorate General of Sea Transportation stated that the cause of the incident is under investigation and could be attributed to natural, technical, or human factors.
Videos released by Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) showed individuals in orange life rafts being rescued. Other footage depicted rescued passengers receiving first aid on board another vessel. This incident follows a separate ferry fire off Madura Island last month that resulted in five fatalities.
