A 30-year-old hospital worker in Budapest, Hungary, has been arrested on suspicion of illegally using human remains. Investigators allege the man stole body parts from his workplace and abandoned cemeteries, and that he admitted to consuming some of them.
The suspect was taken into custody by Hungary’s National Bureau of Investigation on June 17, following the discovery of numerous human remains in his apartment. According to a police statement, the items found included a prepared human face, facial skin, a lower leg, a brain, a hand, skulls, and a heart in a jar. Forensic experts are working to confirm if the heart is human or animal.
During questioning, the man reportedly told officers he was "particularly attracted to human body parts" and had prepared and eaten them. He is employed as a patient transporter at a Budapest hospital and has expressed an interest in anatomy and pathology, as well as dissecting animals.
Authorities believe the exhumed remains originated from his workplace and from cemeteries in Hungary and neighboring Slovakia, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact source and ownership of the body parts. Police have seized the suspect’s electronic devices, including computers, phones, and data cards, as part of the investigation. The scope of the alleged crimes may expand as investigators gather more information on how and where the remains were obtained.
