Houthis Claim Downing of Saudi Jet Amid Escalating Yemen Conflict

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed on Wednesday to have shot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet over Yemen using a missile of their own design. This claim came as Saudi Arabia's military announced it had intercepted a drone strike near the holy city of Mecca.

The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Saree, announced the claim on Telegram, and images shared by Iranian media appeared to show wreckage consistent with a Saudi F-15 jet. The Houthi militia has not provided independent verification of the claim, but the images circulated depict fighters posing with what they assert is the downed aircraft in Marib province.

The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has not yet officially commented on the Houthi assertion regarding the fighter jet. However, the coalition confirmed that its forces downed a Houthi drone south of Mecca after it entered prohibited airspace. Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, a spokesman for the coalition, stated that the drone's target was Mecca, Islam's holiest city.

Al-Maliki described the alleged drone strike as a "disgraceful act" and an attempt to target "the birthplace of revelation." He further stated that the incident was a deliberate provocation aimed at the feelings of millions of Muslims worldwide. The Houthis, who have previously been accused of targeting Mecca in 2017, have denied these allegations.

A potential attack on Mecca could incite significant outrage across the Muslim world and potentially trigger the Mecca joint defense agreement. This pact, signed last month by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan, stipulates that an act of aggression against one member nation will be considered an attack on all three. To date, Turkey and Pakistan have not militarily responded to Houthi actions impacting Saudi Arabia.

The recent escalation follows a wider offensive launched by the Houthis over the weekend, aimed at capturing key territories held by Saudi-backed forces in Yemen. During this offensive, Houthi drone attacks also reportedly crippled Riyadh's critical East-West Pipeline.
