Hang Hang, a lion who gained international fame for a mane resembling a mullet, has died at the age of 17. Guangzhou Zoo in China's Guangdong province announced that the lion died peacefully on July 14.
Hang Hang became a beloved figure among zoo visitors due to his unique mane, which many likened to the 1990s hairstyle. In 2022, the lion went viral after photos circulated online showcasing his distinctive look. Zoo officials attributed the mane's appearance to high humidity, which frizzed the lion's fringe, and noted that Hang Hang would lick his paws and brush his mane, contributing to the styled effect. Some observers compared his look to that of 1990s tennis player Andre Agassi or Joe Exotic, the subject of the "Tiger King" documentary.
The lion's unusual hairstyle led to a surge in visitors at Guangzhou Zoo, with many eager to see Hang Hang in person. Despite widespread speculation and accusations from some visitors that zoo staff had intentionally styled the lion's fur, zookeepers denied any artificial grooming.
Born in 2009 in Hangzhou, Hang Hang was later transferred to Guangzhou Zoo. African lions typically live 10 to 14 years in the wild, but can live longer in captivity with proper care. To honor the lion, Guangzhou Zoo has commissioned a bronze statue in his likeness.
In a statement, the zoo described Hang Hang as "gentle in nature" and recalled how he "enjoyed basking in the sunshine and playing in the rain, leaving visitors with many warm memories."
