Norway's new King Haakon VIII has sworn an oath before the nation's parliament in Oslo, marking the first major step in his reign. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, following the death of his father, King Harald V, on Friday.

During the parliamentary session, a moment of silence was observed in honor of the late King Harald V. Haakon's wife, Queen Mette-Marit, was not present for the proceedings as she continues to recover from a lung transplant.

Mourners have begun paying their respects to the late King. His coffin is lying in state at the Royal Palace until September 8.
