Greek authorities are investigating the death of Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a woman from Scotland, whose body was found in a suitcase in a derelict building in Athens on July 18. Police are treating the case as suspicious and suspect foul play.
Ross, who had connections to Greece and was staying with a friend in the capital, was discovered in the Kypseli district, an area noted for its popularity among tourists and expatriates. Helena Smith, a correspondent for The Guardian in Athens, described the location as a derelict building in a neighborhood that is experiencing a boom and is filled with Airbnbs.
Investigators believe that someone may have accessed Ross's mobile phone after her death to send messages. These messages were reportedly intended to mislead authorities and close friends who were attempting to locate her.
Scotland's First Minister John Swinney expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that Ross's family would receive support from the Scottish government and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. "This is an absolutely appalling case that has been reported overnight," Swinney said, "And obviously I'm deeply concerned that such a tragedy has taken place."
