The German football association (DFB) is pursuing talks with Jurgen Klopp to become the next head coach of the men's national team, following the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann. Nagelsmann requested to be released from his duties on Thursday, the day after Germany's elimination from the World Cup. The DFB has accepted his request, terminating their contract with the 38-year-old former Bayern Munich manager.
In a statement, the DFB confirmed their intention to engage in discussions with Klopp, noting that he has "already signaled his general willingness to take on the position." Germany's World Cup campaign concluded on Monday when they were defeated by Paraguay in a penalty shootout during the round of 32, marking an early exit for the four-time winners.
Initially, Nagelsmann, who was appointed in 2023, expressed a desire to continue in his role, stating after the match that he was "not someone who runs away." However, in a subsequent statement on Friday, he explained that extensive reflection and consultations with trusted individuals had led to his decision. "The decision was anything but easy for me," Nagelsmann said. "My top priority has always been the team's success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start."
