A German doctor, identified as Johannes M., has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 15 patients using lethal doses of sedatives. The 41-year-old palliative care professional was convicted in Berlin for killing 12 women and three men during home visits between September 2021 and July 2024.

Presiding judge Sylvia Busch stated that the conviction for 15 murders might represent only a fraction of the doctor's crimes. Prosecutors indicated that Johannes M. is suspected of killing more than 70 other individuals. The court described him as a "serial killer" involved in an "unfathomable" and "extraordinary" case, imposing the harshest possible sentence, which significantly reduces the likelihood of parole. He has also been banned from practicing medicine in Germany.

The court determined that his actions were not driven by compassion or a misguided sense of assisted dying, but rather by a desire for power over his patients. Prosecutors characterized the physician as having a "lust for murder," with no motive beyond the act of killing itself.

The victims, all under his medical care, ranged in age from 25 to 94. The court found that he intentionally administered an anesthetic and a muscle relaxant, causing respiratory arrest and death within minutes. In at least five instances, he allegedly attempted to set fire to the victims' apartments to conceal the killings. One attempt to incinerate a crime scene failed when the fire did not spread.

Johannes M. confessed to "killing people" and expressed despair at his actions, stating he now understood "the extent of the suffering" he had caused. On one occasion, he killed two patients on the same day, July 8, 2024. A 75-year-old man in Berlin's Kreuzberg district was killed in the morning, followed by a 76-year-old woman in the neighboring Neukoelln district a few hours later.

Suspicions surrounding Johannes M.'s activities were initially raised by care services, prompting a police investigation. He was arrested in August 2024. Investigators initially focused on four cases, but the number of suspicious deaths grew, and further cases remain under review.

This case bears resemblance to that of Niels Hoegel, a German nurse who was sentenced to life in prison in 2019 for murdering 85 patients. In a separate incident, a palliative care nurse received a life sentence in November for murdering 10 patients and attempting to murder 27 others with lethal injections.
