A court in Germany has sentenced Taleb Al-Abdulmohsen to life in prison for deliberately driving a car into a Christmas market in Magdeburg on December 20, 2024, killing six people and injuring hundreds.

The 51-year-old Saudi national was found guilty of murder after prosecutors presented evidence that he intentionally accelerated a rented BMW into the crowded market at approximately 7:02 p.m. local time. The attack, which lasted just over a minute, occurred when the market was filled with shoppers enjoying traditional festive offerings.

Among the victims were a nine-year-old boy and five women, whose ages ranged from 45 to 75. Approximately 300 other individuals sustained injuries during the incident.

Al-Abdulmohsen was apprehended by authorities at the scene immediately following the attack. Investigators determined that he had meticulously planned the assault and acted alone. Prosecutors stated that the motive was primarily personal, rather than driven by significant ideological objectives.

"The defendant's sole concern was, and remains, himself," stated Chief Public Prosecutor Matthias Böttcher. A psychiatric expert who evaluated Al-Abdulmohsen indicated that he suffers from narcissistic personality disorder and has a profound need for attention.

During court proceedings, Al-Abdulmohsen offered limited testimony regarding the attack itself. He reportedly cited conflicts with German authorities and anger over the treatment of Saudi women as motivations for his actions.

The court's decision included the imposition of the maximum possible sentence under German law, reflecting the severity of the crimes committed.
