A doctor who recently returned from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been diagnosed with the Ebola virus in France, the French Ministry of Health announced Wednesday. The unidentified individual is currently receiving care in a specialized facility and is reported to be in stable condition.
All necessary precautionary measures, including patient isolation and secure hospital transfer, were implemented upon the doctor's arrival to prevent any risk of contamination. The Ministry of Health stated that an in-depth epidemiological investigation is underway to identify individuals who may have been in contact with the patient. These individuals will be closely monitored for a 21-day period of home isolation by a regional health agency.
In Congo, the current Ebola outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, has resulted in 1,094 confirmed cases and 277 confirmed deaths, according to the Congolese health ministry. This outbreak has been characterized as the worst on record in terms of case numbers within its initial month. Officials acknowledge that the actual number of cases may be higher, and the peak of the outbreak, which was declared on May 15, could still be ahead.
