Five men have been arrested following a violent farm robbery in South Africa where a farmer was shot, stabbed, severely beaten, and had both his ears severed. The attack occurred last Wednesday at the property of Donovan Marx, 50, in Syferfontein, North West province.
According to reports, three armed men wearing balaclavas first confronted a farmworker on the property, tying him with cable ties. When Mr. Marx arrived in his vehicle, two attackers allegedly shot him in the upper body. He was then dragged into his house, bound, and assaulted. His attackers proceeded to hack off both of his ears.
The assailants stole three firearms from a safe and fled the scene in Mr. Marx's truck. The farmworker managed to free himself and alert authorities. Mr. Marx was transported to Mediclinic Potchefstroom in a serious condition, undergoing emergency surgery. His family confirmed that part of his large intestine was removed and that surgeons were unable to reattach his ears. A bullet had also passed through one of his kidneys, but doctors were able to save the organ. He remained in intensive care, with his family stating his recovery would be extensive.
Police arrested two suspects on Saturday in the Ventersdorp area, followed by three more in Promosa, near Potchefstroom, on Sunday, November 1. The arrests were made by Ventersdorp detectives with assistance from the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit. During the operation, officers recovered four firearms, two of which have been linked to the attack, along with clothing and jewelry.
The five suspects, aged between 26 and 56, are expected to appear in court on charges including house robbery, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. North West Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams commended the investigating officers for their persistence and determination. Ian Cameron, chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police, also praised the swift arrests and highlighted the importance of community cooperation with law enforcement. Mr. Cameron extended his sympathies to Mr. Marx and his family, urging the public to respect their privacy during this time.
