Five men have been arrested in South Africa following a brutal farm robbery during which a farmer was shot, stabbed, beaten, and had both his ears cut off. The incident occurred last Wednesday at a property in Syferfontein, near Ventersdorp, in the North West province.
According to reports, three armed assailants wearing balaclavas first confronted a farmworker, tying his hands and feet with cable ties and demanding to know the owner's whereabouts. When the owner, 50-year-old Donovan Marx, arrived in his vehicle, two attackers reportedly shot him. He was then dragged into his house, restrained, and assaulted before his ears were hacked off. The assailants stole three firearms from a safe and fled in Mr. Marx's truck.
The farmworker managed to free himself and alert authorities. Mr. Marx was transported to Mediclinic Potchefstroom in serious condition, where he underwent emergency surgery. His family confirmed that part of his large intestine was removed and that surgeons could not save his ears. A bullet also passed through one of his kidneys, but doctors were able to preserve the organ.
Police arrested two suspects in the Ventersdorp area on Saturday, followed by three more in Promosa, near Potchefstroom, on Sunday. The arrests were made by Ventersdorp detectives with assistance from the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit. During the operation, officers seized four firearms, two of which have been linked to the attack, along with clothing and jewelry.
The five suspects, aged between 26 and 56, are expected to appear in court on charges including house robbery, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. North West Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams commended the investigating officers for their persistence. Ian Cameron, chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police, also praised the combined efforts of the police, farm watches, private security, and community members who aided in the apprehension of the suspects. He emphasized the importance of building a strong case for prosecution and extended thoughts to Mr. Marx and his family, urging respect for their privacy during his recovery.
